Local Tribe shocked, as South Dakota department cuts Natives from schooling!

With more than 8% of the population in South Dakota being Native American, you’d imagine
that their history would be quite an important thing to learn. However, in this past year, steps
have been taken back to erase what progress had been made in schools to learn about Native
Americans. Rescinding their decision to teach about Native Americans in history, their politics,
and lives within the reservation, the Natives are being practically erased.

What seemed like such a simple thing to do, to teach about a percent of your population, has
suddenly turned political. Instead of teaching about Native American history and culture, it has
gained a political edge, aligning the education with the Republican governors rhetoric. The topic
of education has suddenly become a proverbial political football, bouncing between sides.

I’ll admit, I’m biased towards the Native Americans, being one myself. Seeing their history
erased like that, in schools that their children go to, is disheartening. The topic of education
should never be political, education should be separate from politics, as dividing it would only
cause confusion and strife. Forcing something like education to become something political, to
push a certain political agenda, is just asking for trouble, if you ask me.
