Since school is back in session, it’s time for fall sports. The only way Mercy knows how to celebrate all of the sports at once is through a Pep Rally. The sports involved in the fall season are cross country, golf, softball, and volleyball.
The big components of the pep rally are the dance team and cheerleading team. They prepare dances, cheers, and fun games for the athletes.
The day before the pep rally, I joined the cheerleading team coach, Melissa Regele, in Walking Club. She said, “We are doing new cheers that we learned at camp.” She explained how the cheerleading captains came up with new cheers this summer. This year’s cheer captains are Ellie Hall, Ellie Becker, and Fia Cohen.
Regele explained her excitement for the pep rally. She said “The first pep rally is always fun to watch the freshmen learn new cheers.” She told me how in joint homeroom Ms. Gonderinger taught the freshmen some Mercy cheers with the help of the cheerleaders.
At the pep rally the dance team performed a brand new dance. The dance was choreographed by the dance team coach and captains, Mrs. Kilpatrick, Emma Johnson, and Clara Keating. After their dance, Clara Keating called up members from each sport to participate in a fun new game. Each member of the sport had to scoot down to another member and try to give them as many clothes as possible. There was a tie between softball and cross county. To break this tie, they performed a dance off. The crowd favorite and winner was softball.
At the end of the pep rally, all of the fall sports athletes went in front of the school. The whole school sang a blessing to the athletes. Then the athletes blessed the whole student body. Thus showing everyone, especially the freshmen, how Mercy loves and supports everyone.
