A Tough Go Against Gretna

Lexi Rains

It was a beautiful day for a soccer game on Monday. The Monarchs played an exciting match against the Gretna Dragons at College of Saint Mary. It was their first game of the month and it was a tough one.

It was a very interesting game for Varsity. A player for Gretna received a yellow card early on in the game and received another yellow later on. She was kicked out of the game and will not be able to play in the next one. While the team was playing, the girls on the sidelines who were waiting to be rotated in shouted encouraging and supportive comments while others warmed up and practiced in preparation for being put in the game.

Sadly, Varsity lost 2-1 with the only goal coming from Carina Muse. When asked on how she felt about the loss, Rachel Grigsby said, “I’m really upset that we lost, but I know that we are the better team. If we were to play them again I know we would win, so they better watch out because we’re coming for them.”

JV had a game right after Varsity and they also played Gretna. But it was a bad day for Mercy Soccer as JV also lost 3-1. Marissa Vargas dribbled the ball, beating a couple defenders with her amazing speed, and was able to cross it to Elizabeth Rosenthal for their only goal.

The Monarchs are looking to bounce back from their loss and are preparing for their next match against Concordia on Wednesday.
