I interviewed Casey Moyer on January 17th about the 2017-2018 Mercy High speech season, because I wanted to know more about the speech team. Here is what she had to say:
Q: How is the team preparing for the up coming district tournament?
A: We’re competing in several tournaments to get ready for districts, are practicing hard, and having lots of fun!
Q: How are you personally preparing to take state for the third year in a row?
A: I’m practicing, competing in tournaments, and having fun with my team. I’m enjoying my senior year with the team, and hope to experience state speech again. Hopefully a lot of us will be going up to Kearney this year!
Q: The speech team can spend up to eight hours at a tournament. That is a lot of downtime between rounds, what are some fun speech tournament memories?
A: We play card games, talk with other competitors, hit the concession stand together, and watch Netflix while waiting for the awards ceremony.
Q: How has the speech team helped you become a confident speaker in a room full a people?
A: Speech has taught me that speaking in front of people doesn’t have to be scary, it can be fun.
Q: What advice would you give to any Mercy girls pondering joining the team next year?
A: Join! You get to have fun with your fellow mercy girls, meet people from other schools, and grow more confident with speaking in front of other people. Theater girls would especially enjoy the speech team, since it is all about performing.
For my first interview for mercymonarchs.org, this was very exciting!
